How Much Does a Small Business Website Cost?
A small business website can mean a template setup, a freelancer build or an agency project. Compare what each quote includes before you compare the price.

What will your website really cost?

I laid out the published website prices of a template builder, two freelancer guides, a directory and an agency. They ran from a monthly plan to $100,000. Nobody lied.
The short version: a website costs what its scope costs. For five to eight pages, published prices mostly run from $700 to $15,000.
Need a quote from outside? Our website design and build options are priced in rupiah.
I sell website design, so you know where I stand. Mersa is one row in the tables below, on the same columns as the others.
Key Takeaways
- Scope sets the price, so give every provider the same page list and features.
- A template subscription costs tens of dollars a month and leaves the building to you.
- Most agency projects on Clutch cost under $10,000, and the average there is pulled up by a few huge ones.
- Copy, photos, booking and analytics are what move a quote most.
- Budget the running costs separately from the build, and ask who owns the domain and files.
The Short Answer Depends on Scope
Start with a price from a directory, because its numbers come from reviewed projects rather than a sales page.

Clutch says web design agencies typically charge $2,000 to $100,000, and that most projects reviewed on Clutch cost less than $10,000. Its hourly figure is about $100 to $149.
Clutch also publishes an average project of about $38,000, and I'd ignore that one, because a few very large projects drag the average up.
That's mostly American data, so I'd take it as a pattern and no more.
Why the gap? A subscription, a freelancer's hours and an agency's project are three different purchases.
Three Ways to Buy the Same Small Business Site
Take one brief to keep it honest: a service business, five to eight pages, a contact or booking button, and photos you supply yourself.
Here are the published prices for each route, from each seller's own page, in the seller's currency, and they aren't quotes for your brief.
| Route | Provider | Published price | Unit | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Template | Squarespace, Basic plan | IDR 166,000 a month, billed annually (as shown from Indonesia) | Per month | Squarespace pricing page |
| Freelancer | Cindaro, marketplace freelancer | $200 to $1,500 | Per project | Cindaro guide |
| Freelancer | Cindaro, experienced freelancer | $1,500 to $4,000 | Per project | Cindaro guide |
| Studio | Intervolutions | $700 for up to six pages; $1,200 to $2,400 for a custom business site | Per project | Intervolutions cost page |
| Agency | Clutch, reviewed agencies | Most projects under $10,000; $100 to $149 an hour | Per project, per hour | Clutch pricing guide |
| Agency | Cindaro, agency | $5,000 to $15,000 and up | Per project | Cindaro guide |
| Agency | WebFX, basic tier | $6,500 to $15,000 | Per project | WebFX pricing page |
| Mersa | Landing page | From IDR 7,500,000 | Per project | Mersa pricing |
| Mersa | Website, up to 8 pages | From IDR 25,000,000 | Per project | Mersa pricing |

Cindaro, Intervolutions and WebFX sell this work, so read their figures as vendor claims.
Squarespace shows plans in local currency, and prices vary by country.
Template Setup
You pay a monthly plan and build the site yourself, or pay someone to set it up. The plan covers hosting and templates, and little else.
It leaves out the page list, the copy and the photos. Your time is the real cost: Cindaro puts a DIY build at 20 to 60 hours, which is a working week or more.
Freelancer
A freelancer charges for hours, so the quote moves with what you hand over. Ask for copywriting and it grows.
Why so wide? The people differ. Ask to see two finished sites of about your size, built in the last year, and ask what the owner had to supply.
Agency
An agency usually prices planning, design, copy, build and launch checks as one project.
That's worth paying for with many pages, several integrations or no time.
On a five-page site where you already know what to say, it's wasted.
What Changes the Quote
"Five pages" tells a provider almost nothing. What sits behind the pages sets the price. These move a quote most.
| Driver | Why it changes the price |
|---|---|
| Page count and structure | Each page needs a layout, content and testing |
| Who writes the copy | Writing and editing take real hours |
| Photos and images | Supplied, shot or bought |
| Custom design or a template | Custom design means design time |
| Booking, forms, payments | Each connection needs building and testing |
| Analytics and tracking | Set up once, or not set up at all |
| Support after launch | Fixes, edits and training |
A rule of mine: a quote that doesn't mention copy is a quote for an empty site.
On a clinic or villa site, I'd check the booking button first. A site that looks good and can't take a booking is the expensive kind.
Unsure what the current site needs? A website audit comes first.
One-Time Build Cost and Ongoing Cost
A website has a price to build and a price to keep. Quotes often show the first and hide the second.

The ongoing parts are the domain, the platform plan and someone's time for updates and fixes. Squarespace's plans show the platform side: IDR 166,000 to IDR 382,000 a month, billed annually.
Cindaro lists a managed plan at about $50 to $300 a month, and a care plan at $100 to $500. Those are vendor figures for a person's time and cover the platform separately.
Don't add them up as one thing. A platform fee is the cost of the tool, and building the site costs extra.
Budget search work as a separate line. A good site doesn't rank by itself, and what SEO costs is a different bill (that post is about Australia).
A quote that bundles monthly SEO into the build is two purchases. Price the second one on its own against what SEO costs by the month, project or hour.
How to Compare Three Proposals
Put the three quotes in one table and fill every row from the paperwork. A blank row is a question for the provider.
| Row | What to write down |
|---|---|
| Deliverables | Pages, features, forms, booking |
| Copy and images | Who supplies them, who edits them |
| Revisions | How many rounds, and what counts as one |
| Ownership and access | Domain, files and logins in your name |
| Launch support | Testing, redirects, tracking set up |
| Recurring fees | What you pay each month and what it covers |
| Change requests | The hourly rate for anything added later |
The last two rows cost people most. A cheap build with a high monthly fee can end up dearer than the pricier build, so add up 18 months of both.
Then give each provider the same list. When one says "that's extra", you've found a hidden number.
See what changed between quotes?
Is a Website Redesign a Different Budget?
Often, yes. A redesign adds work a new build doesn't: moving old pages, keeping the addresses that already get traffic, and cleaning up stale content.
It can also cost less, if the structure is sound and only the design is tired. Ask for the redesign to be scoped on its own, with what stays and what goes.
Treat a redesign quote like any new quote, with the same questions about copy and ownership.
Where Mersa Fits
We run Mersa from Bali, and Mersa's website design scope and price is from IDR 7,500,000 for a landing page and from IDR 25,000,000 for a website. Here is what each holds.
| Offer | Price | Unit | What's in it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Landing page | From IDR 7,500,000 | Per project | One conversion page for one service or campaign, a booking button, tracking |
| Website | From IDR 25,000,000 | Per project | Up to 8 pages, one per main service, a booking path, SEO and schema, mobile first |
Every price we publish is on one pricing page. They're our figures and say nothing about the market.
Who should pick something else? If you want to build it yourself and have the hours, a template plan costs far less than any of us.
If you need dozens of pages or an online shop, ask for a quote scoped for that. Ours is sized for a service business.
Common Questions
How much should I budget for a small business website if I already have the copy and photos?
It depends on the builder and the features. Published prices run from about $700 for a six-page studio build to $15,000 for an agency. Ask every provider to price the same page list and confirm launch checks.
Is a template website good enough for a small business?
Yes, if the template supports your pages and your customer's path to booking. The subscription is only part of the cost when you also need someone to set it up, write content or connect a booking form.
What should a web design agency quote include?
The pages, who writes the copy, design and build work, integrations, revision rounds, launch tasks, ownership of the domain and files, and recurring fees. Anything described only as an assumption should be priced separately.
Why did two website designers quote such different prices?
Usually the scopes differ. One quote may cover a template with your copy, another planning, copywriting, custom design and booking. Compare what each includes, such as pages, copy and support, before you compare the totals.
Should I pay monthly for a website or pay upfront?
Neither is automatically cheaper. Add the total payments over the years you expect to use the site, check what happens if you cancel, and confirm that the domain, content and site files are in your name.
How much does it cost to maintain a small business website?
It varies by platform. Cindaro lists managed plans at about $50 to $300 a month and care plans at $100 to $500. Separate the platform fee from a person's time for updates, backups, security checks and fixes.
